Study Finds Increased Mesothelioma Death Rates In A Group Of Shipyard Workers

by Sam Gurgis

A recent study conducted on workers in a US Coast Guard shipyard has found a significantly greater mortality rate associated with lung cancer and mesothelioma compared to the general population. The study also found an increased general mortality rate.

The study followed 4702 (4413 men and 289 women) civilian workers who were employed at the shipyard between January 1950 and December 1964. The study then measured the number of deaths and their causes through 31 December 2001.

The study was conducted by S Krstev, P Stewart, J Rusiecki, A Blair and was published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The original study publication is available at http://oem.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/64/10/651.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is usually associated with exposure to asbestos. The majority of individuals who are diagnosed with mesothelioma have a history of exposure to asbestos particles at work or home. Family members of workers have also been affected. Renovators of homes containing asbestos cement material are accounting for an increasing number of diagnosed sufferers. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear for decades after the exposure to asbestos. Symptoms include abdominal pain and weight loss. Diagnosis of mesothelioma can be difficult due to the fact that the symptoms are similar to other respiratory diseases.

Since mesothelioma is primarily caused by exposure to asbestos, mesothelioma can be best be prevented by avoiding or limiting exposure to asbestos in homes, public buildings, and at work. Workers that may be at risk include miners, factory workers, insulation manufacturers, railroad workers, ship builders, contractors and construction workers, particularly those involved with insulation. If there is a possibility of exposure (such as when renovating old buildings) protective equipment should be used and safety procedures should be applied. Asbestos was commonly used in building materials due to its durability and fire-resistant properties. In addition to buildings, asbestos was used in the manufacture of cars and ships and many other products.

Not Only Asbestos Causes Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

Mesothelioma lung cancer is usually associated with asbestos exposure. In fact there are many other risk factors that cause mesothelioma cancer. One of them is the erionite. Erionite is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that belongs to a group of minerals called zeolites. Zeolites are hydrated aluminosilicates of the alkaline and alkaline-earth metals.
Erionite was used in the past as a noble metal-impregnated catalyst in a hydrocarbon-cracking process. It was studied for use in fertilizers and to control odors in livestock production, because of its ability to selectively adsorb molecules from air or liquids. In many countries erionite blocks were used (and may be are still used) as building material or in stucco pastes and whitewash.
Erionite was mentioned for the first time as a mesothelioma lung cancer risk factor in 1975, when Turkish government presented a study that uncovered a high incidence of a rare malignant mesothelioma in lung tissues of people in certain small villages in the Cappadocia area in Turkey’s central mountainous region. In two small villages the mesothelioma lung cancer accounted for 43% of the deaths during 23 years period of study. Erionite fibers were found in biopsies of lungs of the mesothelioma cancer afflicted people. Comparing this to a 9.7% rate of death from this disease among asbestos insulation installers shows how anomalous this condition was.
Further studies showed erionite causes similar diseases in laboratory animals. When researchers at Mt. Sinai Hospital injected rats with the same dosage of erionite that they used for asbestos, the rats didn’t live long enough to get mesothelioma cancer. At a much-reduced dose, the rats did get cancer. Erionite is probably the most toxic known mineral - a milligram of fibers in the lungs is lethal.
Today erionite is considered so hazardous that the EPA requires any one who intends to manufacture, import or process any article containing erionite to notify the E.P.A. 90 days in advance. This gives the EPA a chance to review, limit or prohibit that activity. Read the rest of article here..

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer. It caused by previous exposure to asbestos. An exposure of as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later. Simian virus 40 (SV40) may act as a cofactor in the development of mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. The two major types of malignant mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma, which concerns the mesothelium membrane that surrounds the lungs, and peritoneal mesothelioma which concerns the mesothelium layer that covers the organs in the abdominal cavity. The people most at risk from being carriers of this cancer are those have worked with asbestos over the past thirty to fifty years. Because of this, the disease is most common in men between the ages of sixty and seventy as this is the group that commonly worked with asbestos during those years. Because of the lack of protection and regulations in those days, these workers were constantly exposed to the dust and fibres from the asbestos, which caused the cells of the mesothelium to become abnormal. Many building materials used in both public and domestic premises prior to the banning of asbestos may contain asbestos. Those performing renovation works or diy activities may expose themselves to asbestos dust.

Mesothelium helps protect the organs by producing a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around. Mesothelioma is an extremely malignant and incurable cancer that infects the membrane that surrounds most of the internal organs. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Affecting the mesothelial cells that make up the mesothelium – the outer lining that protects the body’s major organs such as the heart, stomach and lungs. Pleural mesothelioma represents 75% of mesothelioma cases - but it is far from the only type of this deadly cancer. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach and intestines, and is just as dangerous and deadly. Treatment of MM using conventional therapies has not proved successful and patients have a median survival time of 6 - 12 months after presentation. The clinical behaviour of the malignancy is affected by several factors including the continuous mesothelial surface of the pleural cavity

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Health-care workers who specialize in part control are employing state-of-the art techniques to successfully fight pain.

2. During the initial stages of mesothelioma, pain can be relieved with over-the-counter analgesics, such as aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin).

3. Drug therapy is the primary method for treating mesothelioma pain.

4. Non-Opoids are pain-relieving medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and NSAIDs, such as ibuprofin, which can be purchases over-the-counter and taken orally.

5. Opoids are the strongest medicines available to treat pain. Opoids, such as codeine, morphine, oxcodone, fentany, and hydromorphone, are very effective in relieving mesothelioma pain.

6. Adjuvant analgesics are medicines intended for purposes other than pain relief. A number of these are used to alleviate pain associated with mesothelioma, such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and steroids.

7. Emotional Support to Help Relieve Pain.As with all aspects of mesothelioma, emotional support from family or professional counseling can play a key role in pain management

8. For patients with localized disease, and who can tolerate a radical surgery, radiation is often given post-operatively as a consolidative treatment.

9. Chrysotile has been used more frequently, hence many mesotheliomas are caused by chrysotile.

10. Removal is taking place in schools and other public buildings throughout the U.S. The hope is that these measures will greatly reduce the occurrence of this cancer.

Erionite is no longer mined or marketed for commercial purposes. Although other natural zeolites have many commercial uses (pet litter, soil conditioners, animal feed, waste-water treatment, gas absorbents, etc.) So potential occupational exposure to erionite occurs during the production and mining of other zeolites.

And there are questions:

Are there other mineralogical hazards like erionite and asbestos?

Should we expected mesothelioma lung cancer increases not only from asbestos exposure after another 20 - 30 years?

Mesothelioma - Cause and Effect of Mesothelioma

Almost all Mesothelioma cancer cases are due to asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma affects the protective lining of the body’s internal organs known as the Mesothelium. When you inhale air containing asbestos particles, the air directly affects the Mesothelium lining of the body. In most cases, the lungs and abdomen are affected the most.

Asbestos fibers are very fine and tiny and when they come into contact with the lungs of anyone who is exposed, it causes inflammation and the formation of scar tissue. This may then lead to Mesothelioma. The fibers become imbedded into the lungs and works through the membrane around it causing this type of cancer.

Asbestos is made of minerals with long thin fibrous crystals and it is flexible, strong and highly durable. Asbestos as also widely used in insulation because of its resistance to heat, electricity and chemical damage. Because it had so many good properties and was cheap to produce, it was used virtually everywhere and was in almost all buildings and houses. It was only until the 1960s that the link between Asbestos and Mesothelioma was discovered.

Abdominal Mesothelioma is caused when the fine Asbestos fibers find their way into the digestive system when swallowed. Again, this will affect the protective lining of the abdominal passage and may cause this type of cancer. Besides that, exposure to Asbestos may also cause person to suffer from chronic lung disease and respiratory problems.

People who are exposed to Asbestos on a daily basis like construction workers, factory workers or even those who live near asbestos factories are most likely to develop Mesothelioma. Since the link between this deadly cancer and asbestos was discovered, this material is no longer widely used. However, Mesothelioma may not surface for as long as 60 years after exposure. Therefore, anyone who came into contact with this material should be regularly checked for this cancer.

In some very rare cases, Mesothelioma does develop even if a person is not exposed to asbestos. The exact cause for this is still unknown and it may be due to genetics or family history. Since the link between asbestos and this cancer was discovered, home and buildings that used this material for insulation and building materials were removed. As there is a proven direct linkage between this material and Mesothelioma, we should all take extra precaution if were to come into contact with this deadly material. It is best to avoid being exposed to this harmful material at all cost.

Mesothelioma Cancer Diagnosis

What Exactly Is Mesothelioma ?

Mesothelioma the medical name for cancer of the lung or the abdomen lining, and is usually caused by exposure to asbestos.

Mesothelioma Cancer | Asbestos

Asbestos is a type of building material used in thermal insulation products and ceiling tiles. Asbestos usage peaked during the 1950s - 1970s, but during the late 1960s, concerns over the health consequences of asbestos exposure began to arise, thereby decreasing the amount of asbestos manufactured over the following two decades. But even though new measures where brought in to get rid of it, many schools and public buildings still contain asbestos.

Small asbestos fibers that enter the air do not evaporate and can remain suspended in the air for a long time. These fibers, when breathed into the body, are toxic. The people most at risk are :-

People working in factories that manufacture asbestos are likely to have a high exposure to asbestos and are most at risk of developing asbestosis or mesothelioma.

Family members of workers exposed to asbestos in the workplace are susceptible to exposure from asbestos dust brought home by the worker on his clothes or skin.

Those who live in the vicinity of an asbestos manufacturing plant are also at risk.

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until between twenty and fifty years after exposure, which explains why so many new cases of this form of cancer are coming to light now. Many people who haven’t been in contact with asbestos for decades, are now showing symptoms of this dreadful desease.

As with many forms of cancer, mesothelioma can spread rapidly. Symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, loss of weight, and chest pains. If it is diagnosed early enough, the tumor can be surgically removed, and with chemotherapy and radiation treatment, a full recovery is often possible.

However, in more advanced cases, cure is usually not possible. In such cases, chemotherapy and radiation treatment can be used alongside other pain relief treatments, to ease the symptoms. Where cure is not possible, the average survival time is between four and eighteen months, depending on the stage of the tumor and the general health of the patient.

I was prompted to write about mesothelioma because as a child I lived near a factory which produced asbestos, and I personally know families who have suffered due to this terrible desease.

Guide by asbestos and the issues of health

Unless you have been completely out of touch, then you probably noise about the dangers of asbestos. So, what’s the problem?

Guide by asbestos and the issues of health

Asbestos is a material fibers, which are very resistant to fire. It has a long history. If, for the first time on a large scale at the turn of the twentieth century, there is already much longer. Indeed, the ancient Egyptians are known for the use of burial clothes.

Modern Common applications for building materials, products for the automotive and pads, which is a constant series with the element fire. Asbestos is today, but on a very small scale. The reason has to do its utmost to see to the health. Asbestos itself is not dangerous to humans. What is bad, however, the asbestos dust.

Dust from asbestos is a perverse thing. Based on the chemical composition of matter, the dust is a bit like a cloud of fine particles of glass. Although it does not affect the skin, they make a lot of damage to lungs. Do the things that asbestos dust is so fine that it is easy to asbestos as a building material panels from the ceiling and walls. Once in the air, that is all but invisible. A longer exposure, such as when you are in or on a building with asbestos materials, large quantities of toxic dust, in the lungs.

Once asbestos dust in your lungs, then you can not deport by coughing. This does not mean that the body does not try. The asbestosis is the healing of the lungs, the acid caused by the body, in an effort to asbestos dust. If this process is entitled, in the coming 10 to 20 years, the lungs can no longer work because the excess of scars. If this is not good, it escalates. The asbestos dust can lead to a terminal cancer in the form of mesothelioma. [What is the mesothelioma?]

Asbestos is an excellent material for the fire, which saves us during the incineration of the assassination of us in a much slower. Since 1989, he was banned in the United States, except in some areas.

Asbestos - miracle of the mineral threat to the mesothelioma

During the Second World War, asbestos was welcomed by many as a miracle mineral glass. Almost everything can be built or manufactured from this mineral. The construction as an additive for the strengthening of the cement and plastics. The asbestos fibers are separated into thin lines, which they do not have electricity and no heat or chemicals.

The four main types of asbestos are: brown with amosite fibers, Anthophyllite fibers with gray, white Christie, crocidolite and blue. A crimped by chrysotile fibers, while the three other master than the fibers. These fibers break easily in the dust, and the slippage in the air. They stick to the skin, clothing, and can easily be inhaled or statement.

Emporgeschnellt use of asbestos during the Second World War. Shipbuilding plenty of asbestos used in the cargo and ships to support the insulation of the boiler, pipes, steam and hot water pipes. Asbestos was the miracle building material, because it was easy to obtain, processed and transported.

After the Second World War of asbestos in the cars used shoes and inserts break coupling. Asbestos is its way into residential and industrial area of building materials, water supply, sewage materials, ceilings and floor coverings, materials and vermiculite garden for only a few.

In the years 1970, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has banned the use of asbestos in several products can rid of asbestos fibers into the environment during use, that the discovery of threats to the health of ‘Inhalation of asbestos dust. The rules governing the use of asbestos and the concern for public opinion since 1970 have a noticeable decline in the use of asbestos in the United States.

In 1989, all new uses of asbestos were banned by the Environmental Protection Agency, if all the old practices before this year were still allowed. The EPA has proposed that for the inspection of schools and damaged asbestos issue or eliminate him in the barriers to protect them. Vermiculite, widely used in horticulture is a concern of the EPA has recommended that the use of the outdoor area, which is the amount of dust used, and for the maintenance of the vermiculite damp.

Asbestos can cause serious threats to health, such as cough, injury of the lung, respiratory and lung cancer. Most people are not sick in the early stages of development, but usually takes the issue away, often to jobs, such as mining, milling, manufacturing of asbestos in the building. Fire brigade, démolisseurs, to remove the signs, plaster, and all other workers in the occupations associated with the destruction of buildings, ships and cars are also in the threats and dangers of asbestos.

Over a period of several years to asbestos can cause very serious health problems, such as mesothelioma. The mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer in the membrane, wallpapered numerous cavities of the body, including the lungs, abdomen and heart, and was at the exhibition in the asbestos dust. In mesothelioma, the cells of the Mesothelioms metastasize and damage adjacent organs and tissues.

Risk of the development of a mesothelioma takes a long time, often as long as twenty-five or thirty years before the onset of symptoms completely. Not all workers who have been exposed, the development of diseases caused by asbestos, but the workers who have been exposed, in the fibers can be on their clothes, hair, shoes and skin home their families. To address this risk, most industries, workers need to bathe and change clothes before the finish work.

Numerous studies were conducted on the risks of diseases caused by asbestos. The results of such a study on the dangers of tobacco consumption and exposure to asbestos is extremely dangerous.

Learn more about epithelial cells Malignant Mesothelioma

Over the years, the disease called mesothelioma, epithelial cells or malignant mesothelioma, has been gaining popularity. This is because the number of patients diagnosed with the disease has been steadily upwards. Moreover, apart from the increase in number, there is also controversy loved the disease.

The mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer, connective tissues in the human body, to inner organs. There is a presence and the development of the tumour when a person diagnosed with mesothelioma. It was noted that the disease is caused only by exposure to asbestos, a building material far in the past, the isolation.

Épithéliales Malignant mesothelioma is the form of Mesothelioms. It is estimated that approximately 50% to 70% of mesothelioma are diagnosed as malignant epithelial mesothelioma.

That is because epithelial malignant mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers tiny particles. The other form of mesothelioma, sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma, is located in the wall of the stomach and is supported by the host, and that is not very likely.

What is epithelial cells Malignant mesothelioma?

Épithéliales malignant mesothelioma occurs when important accumulation of asbestos fibers into the surrounding tissue mesothelia the chest and lungs. That is why most of the symptoms of cancer pain in the two sides of the chest, coughing, fever, fatigue and shortness of breath.

Because it is a form of cancer, malignant mesothelioma epithelial cells are also important causes of weight loss and sometimes release of blood. The disease can also affect other organs of the body, not just the lungs. That is the reason why the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma epithelial cells during the time.

Asbestos is in the nature of disintegration. This means that if they air in the vicinity of the substance can be very small and invisible fibers, which come and go with the air. The problem is that the people who can breathe the air of asbestos fibers.

If you asbestos for about a month or two, the chances are much greater than you would a diagnosis mesothelioma. But that would not be before 30 t0 after about 50 years. The reason for this is that mesothelioma is a very long waiting time or expansion.

It could be a kind of consolation that epithelial cells Malignant mesothelioma has more than forecast, or the survival rate for patients, the other kind of mesothelioma. However, if the patient is unable, by this type of cancer, which would be capable of, if only to live up to a year.

Judicial

You may have heard or read, probably more than the message that the majority of epithelial cells malignant mesothelioma patients in the whole world, for submission to the companies in which they asbestos. In Africa, where the mining of asbestos was widespread in the United States, under to Australia from asbestos and the construction companies that were vigorously against the allegations to defend mesothelioma.

The persons responsible for the threat to the development of a malignant epithelial mesothelioma cells are diverse and include protection of young people and workers in the construction sector. Also, the office workers and the ordinary people who work, or are generally on the premises, the asbestos as insulation materials are also big risk for the development of the disease.

The lawyers and complainants of existing cases argue that the companies that asbestos should compensate the affected persons to cancer, because if not for exposure to asbestos, these people do not have the disease in the first place.

Everyone has the right to compensation for the risk to the health or distraction of the threat to health from everyone. There is no reason for epithelial cells malignant mesothelioma patients would not equal.

After all, asbestos companies benefited greatly from the production and use of asbestos over the years. It is time that they pay for their own actions.

How to avoid epithelial cells Malignant Mesothelioma

Of course, the prevention of epithelial cells Malignant mesothelioma in principle, you are not involved in asbestos. It would be no problem, because nowadays almost all of the construction companies no longer use asbestos insulators in the years since 1980.

However, you must determine whether your building or it contains asbestos. Normally, the material within these walls. Does your asbestos, no freight. Asbestos is not disintegrate less freely in the air, instantly building administrator that the breakthrough in your walls, and there is the insulation of asbestos.
