Mesothelioma: The Silent Killer

by Patricia Woloch

On September 11, 2001, 2,602 people died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Thousands more may die a slow and painful death caused by exposure to asbestos released in the collapse of the towers. Immediately after the attacks over 100,000 people were exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos and over 670,000 New Yorkers may still be at risk for developing environmental illness.

;Mesothelioma is cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The symptoms of mesothelioma can take 10 to 50 years to appear, but once the disease is diagnosed it progresses rapidly and most patients have less than a year to live. Asbestos levels after the 9/11 attacks were so extreme that symptoms have appeared as soon as two years after exposure.

The danger could have been minimized
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) repeatedly tried to issue warnings about the threat of airborne contaminants. These warnings would have given emergency workers and others the chance to protect themselves from airborne contaminants. The warnings were removed from the EPA press releases by the White House Council on Environmental Quality. In April, 2007, the U.S. Court of Appeals issued a decision supporting the Council’s actions.

First responder first to die
Emergency responder Deborah Reeve developed symptoms of asbestos related illness in 2003 and was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2004. While she was save the lives of others during the aftermath of 9/11 she was unknowingly being exposed to massive amounts of asbestos which, leading to her own death in 2006. In the words of her husband David, “(Deborah) got killed on September 11, and she didn’t die until March 15, 2006. She got killed and didn’t know.”

The evidence was hiding in a shirt
Yehuda Kaploun worked at ground zero for about 48 hours immediately after the collapse. He saved the shirt he was wearing to honor the fallen of 9/11. In April, 2006, the New York Post reported that when a portion of that shirt was analyzed, it was found to contain 93,000 times the amount of chrysotile asbestos normally found in American cities.

The World Trade Center Cough
You may not have heard about mesothelioma in connection with 9/11, but you probably have heard of “the World Trade Center cough.” In April, 2007, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 62% of those caught in the dust cloud, and 46% of those not caught in the cloud but living or working in the area now suffer from respiratory problems. The Mount Sinai Medical Center’s World Trade Center health study found that 85% of its 70,000 participants suffer from respiratory problems. First responders have been suffering respiratory problems since immediately after the attacks.

Who may be affected?
First responders are among those known to be adversely affected, but they are not the only ones. Anyone who was in the area during and after the collapse of the towers may have been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos. The contamination lasted for weeks or months after the collapse. Even as tests were showing enormous amounts of asbestos in the air, officials were urging the public to return to the downtown area. People who lived and worked in the area, children going to school in the area, and anyone who happened to pass through, may have been affected. Because the disease can take up to 50 years after exposure to develop, it will be decades before we really know how many people were really killed by the events of 9/11 and the government’s cover-up of the contamination.

Mesothelioma: How doctors diagnose cancer asbestos?

As we have in our previous articles, maybe you have asbestos in the air suspended particles, if you have to build the ships, in conjunction with thermal insulation and changing old brake pads. There are many professions are dangerous, as the asbestos factory workers in the automotive industry, machinery, steel, tin, the Scotsman dry, insulating electricians, painters, hairdressers and even teachers. Then, as the doctors mesothelioma?

If your doctor, the first think that there is no reason to suspect mesothelioma is the question relates to your professional history. The importance is the cancer of asbestos in the early stages of the disease, when the time is crucial. The survival rate is eight to twelve months on average. But the collection and treatment of early detection Mesothelioms to some types of cancer to better results.

Doctors are looking for, the signs and symptoms of cancer. The mesothelioma symptoms often up to 20 or more years after exposure to asbestos. But in rats within pleural mesothelioma introduction of chrysotile asbestos fibers can mesothelioma in several months.

People complain about mesothelioma breathing difficulty breathing, persistent cough, sputum and chest pain. The pain from the pleura - lung coating, which is very sensitive to the irritation. Mesothelioma tends to the accumulation of fluid in the pleural fibrosis cavity.

Mesothelioma peritoneal causes of weight loss, the pain and ascites (swelling of the abdomen due to fluid in the abdominal cavity). Mesothelioma peritoneal can also block the intestines and cause all sorts of trouble with Disabilities good. Like many cancers, asbestos cancer also changes coagulation, which causes decrease in blood cells (anemia), night sweats and fever. Abdominal water can cause nausea and foot in the tuber. In general, the symptoms of mesothelioma are not very precise. You can characterize all other types of cancer and many other diseases that are not cancer cells. The problem of delays in diagnosis. Sometimes the patients who believe they have a viral pneumonia. Some patients show no symptoms at all. Mesothelioma in advanced stages, and most cancers, the cause fatigue.

An X-ray may show a collection of fluid.

What is a pleural effusion? Épanchement pleural mesothelioma is the accumulation of fluid in the pleura between the inner chest and diaphragm, lungs and pleura. What is the pleura? Plèvre is the thin layer of cells, the lung specialist and the internal chest. He has an idea of a closed plastic bag with a small amount of liquid inside. Basically this bag, who easily to the lungs chest wall in the expansion of breathing. The pleura is the membrane of cells mésothéliales. Exactly these cells produce a small amount of lubricant. The amount of the liquid is always in the balance. Extra fluid pleural mesothelioma is fast réabsorbé. If there is too much liquid, the Erguß. Abdominal cavity lining similarly notified of the peritoneum, based on the way in which abdominal pleura cover the lungs. Mesothelioma leads to fluid, caused by cancer cells in the pleura or peritoneum irritant. This disease leads to fluid in your stomach or difficulty breathing.

Transsudation with pleural effusion is a clear liquid. It shows that in general, by an imbalance in the production of liquid and relocation costs. It is characteristic for a different disease. Doctors should think first of heart failure. Mesothelioma prefer an exudate. Exsudats are a pleural effusion cloudy with a lot of cells and proteins. Exsudats according to the pleura is irritated and inflamed, as it is in the mesothelioma. In order to verify the nature of spitting, the doctors of a needle and a sample of the liquid. The stock is considered thoracentèse diagnosis. The fluid is examined in the laboratory. If that is the cause mesothelioma, the cancer cells can be in the liquid

Why is the shortness? The dyspnea (breathing difficulty breathing) just happens because fluid accumulates, and press the lungs, expresses far the chest wall and inside of the lungs smaller. Also, the pain caused by inflammation of the pleura patients prevents the deep breathing. The inflammation of the pleura receptors to a dry cough. Lightning rod for the lungs with a stethoscope shows decreased breath sounds. If you are breast sounds meager. All of this is a consequence of the accumulation of fluid.

During the visit from your doctor should discuss your concerns about the risk from asbestos in the past. Your doctor should check the area of pain and the tuber is, it should also hear your sound and breath to the collection of fluids. If your doctor suspect, it can Erguß of tests and X-rays or to a specialist.

If a doctor suspect mesothelioma, dose not many tests on the hands. Many of the standard tests can no results in the mesothelioma. Simply radiograph of the chest shows are not always small pleural effusion. A film by décubitus page can be required to small fluid collections (the same X-rays, but from the side). If not, computed tomography or ultrasound can show the effusion.
